Job Title: Prototyping Engineer

Location: The Netherlands, Eindhoven

Department: Research & Development

Reports to: Head of R&D Experience: 3–5 years minimum

Company Overview:

MicroAlign is a photonics-based company dedicated to developing the next generation of fiber array solutions. Our technology is important in industries like quantum computing and communications. We are committed to pushing the boundaries of photonics packaging technologies to create impactful products that revolutionize the way we interact with light

Job Description:

We are looking for a creative and hands-on Prototyping Engineer who thrives on turning ideas into reality. You will be at the heart of our innovation pipeline, working directly on customer projects to design, build, and test novel solutions. You combine strong technical depth with an entrepreneurial mindset — someone who is not afraid to experiment, iterate fast, and deliver working prototypes that are ready for real-world deployment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop functional prototypes from concept to working solution, including mechanical, electronic, and software components.
  • Use CAD tools to create 3D models, assemblies, and drawings for fabrication.
  • Write clean, functional code to control, simulate, or test prototype behaviour (Python, C/C++, Arduino, or similar).
  • Integrate basic electronics such as sensors, actuators, microcontrollers, and power systems into prototypes.
  • Collaborate directly with customers to understand requirements and translate them into practical technical solutions.
  • Evaluate feasibility of proposed solutions with an eye towards manufacturability and scalability.
  • Document designs, experiments, and results clearly for internal and customer use.
  • Stay up-to-date with relevant technologies, materials, and fabrication techniques (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC, etc.).

What We Are Looking For

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in at least one professional CAD package (parametric modelling, assemblies, BOM management).
  • Solid coding skills in one or more languages commonly used in embedded or rapid prototyping contexts.
  • Basic electronics knowledge: reading schematics, working with sensors, microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, or equivalent).
  • Experience with prototype fabrication and evaluating manufacturing feasibility: FDM/SLA 3D printing, laser cutting, basic metalworking, or similar workshop skills.

Mindset & Soft Skills

  • Highly independent: you take ownership of a problem and drive it to completion without needing constant direction.
  • Creative problem-solver who can generate multiple solution concepts and select the most practical one.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and early-stage projects where requirements are not always fully defined.
  • Strong communication skills to work with customers and cross-functional teams.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience in prototyping, product development, or a maker/innovation environment.
  • A portfolio of self-initiated or professional projects demonstrating end-to-end prototyping capability is a strong plus.

Joining our team at MicroAlign offers plenty of opportunities for professional development, growth, and influence over the work environment. We’re dedicated to creating a culture of learning, helping each other where we can, and providing continuous feedback.

MicroAlign is an equal-opportunity employer and values diversity in the workplace. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
