Job Title: Quantum Hardware Engineer
Location: Enschede, Netherlands

Job Description

As a Quantum Hardware Engineer at QuiX Quantum, you will be instrumental in designing and scaling advanced photonic components for quantum computing systems. You will take ownership of R&D projects, focusing on the design of experiments for prototype photonic integrated circuits, supporting component-level research, and ensuring successful hardware integration. In this role, you will work closely with cross-functional teams, including quantum scientists and electrical engineers, while building and testing optical setups in a lab environment.

You will also be responsible for the assembly, characterization, and verification of photonic components, ensuring they are scalable for full-scale production. This position provides the opportunity to work directly with quantum processors and play a vital role in advancing the technology that powers the quantum future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform design of experiments for prototype photonic integrated circuits.
  • Assemble, test, measure, and characterize photonic devices, ensuring scalability for production.
  • Develop and maintain nonlinear optical setups in a laboratory environment.
  • Collaborate with design, production, and quantum science teams to integrate photonic hardware.
  • Own internal and EU-subsidized projects from start to finish.
  • Interface with suppliers for sourcing and technical coordination.
  • Document laboratory findings and present results at internal meetings and scientific conferences.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. (preferred) or Master’s degree in applied sciences, with a focus on experimental photonics or quantum optics.
  • Hands-on experience with optical lab equipment, including lasers, photodiode arrays, and tabletop optical components.
  • Strong knowledge of chip-integrated photonic components (e.g., ring resonators, MZIs, beam splitters, waveguide coupling).
  • Methodical, systematic approach to applied science.
  • Proficiency in Python for data analysis and experiment automation.
  • Strong technical writing skills for internal documentation and scientific reporting.
  • Proactive, accurate, and independent working style.
  • Fluent in English, both verbal and written.

Exciting Aspects of the Role

  • The technology we design, assemble, test, and scale up operates at the cutting edge of quantum computer engineering.
  • You will work on challenging, high-tech projects, solving complex problems and contributing to breakthrough innovations in the quantum field.
  • You’ll be part of a dynamic and diverse team comprised of experts from around the globe, where everyone brings a unique specialty to the table.
  • This role offers you the chance to work directly with quantum processors in a lab environment, investigating their performance, assembling their components, and helping shape their functional design.
  • You’ll be a key contributor to driving innovation for a quantum future, playing an essential role in scaling quantum technologies from prototype to full-scale production.
