Summer Student job – Photonics & Gas Sensor Development
Spectrik
Location: Eindhoven, NL
Duration: Summer 2025 (flexible start dates)
Company: Spectrik – The Future of Laser-Based Gas Sensing
🚀 Who We Are
At Spectrik, we’re building cutting-edge laser-based gas sensors to revolutionize how industries optimize their processes. From ammonia sensing in agriculture to methane monitoring in logistics, our work combines photonics, electronics, and smart software to solve real-world problems with precision and speed.
We’re a startup — meaning things move fast, ideas are welcome, and you’ll have real impact from day one.
🔧 What You'll Work On
This summer, we’re offering a unique opportunity to join our R&D team on real, hands-on projects. Depending on your background and interests, you might:
- Tune next-gen lasers used in spectroscopy techniques, and develop control systems to stabilize and modulate them.
- Build experimental platforms for characterizing Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs), with custom optomechatronic setups.
- Design RF-enabled PCBs to drive lasers and read out high-speed photodetector signals.
- Develop embedded software to control laser hardware using protocols like I2C/SPI, or even experiment with Software Defined Radio (SDR) approaches.
- Simulate complex laser-based systems using Python and physics-based modeling to optimize performance before hitting the lab.
🧠 Who You Are
We’re looking for proactive, curious students who want to get their hands dirty, learn fast, and contribute meaningfully. You're probably studying something like:
- Photonics / Physics
- Electrical or Mechatronic Engineering
- Embedded Systems
- Applied Physics / Applied Mathematics
- Computer Science (with a passion for experimental science)
Bonus points if you’ve tinkered with lasers, RF circuits, experimental setups, or Python-based simulations.
✅ What You Bring
- A solid technical foundation in one or more of the following: laser physics, RF electronics, embedded software, experimental optics, or numerical simulation.
- Experience with Python, and optionally C/C++ for hardware control.
- A “let’s build it” mindset — startup energy, willingness to experiment, and not afraid of debugging in the lab.
- You're self-starting, resourceful, and not afraid to learn by doing.
🎁 What We Offer
- A hands-on role in a fast-moving deep tech startup.
- Guidance from experienced engineers and researchers.
- Flexibility in projects based on your skills and curiosity.
- A real opportunity to shape something from the ground up.
- Competitive compensation.
